Co-Creating AI-Driven VR Simulation for Enhancing Communication Competence in Nursing Students
Effective communication is essential in nursing practice, directly impacting patient safety, interprofessional teamwork, and care quality. Poor communication remains a leading cause of adverse events, yet nursing students frequently report inadequate preparation for complex clinical interactions, particularly the patient assessments and handovers. Traditional teaching methods like role-play and standardised patients provide limited structured practice and immediate feedback opportunities.
This educational innovation introduces an AI-powered virtual reality (VR) simulation system designed to bridge this training gap. Developed collaboratively by nursing educators, students, and technical experts, the system features different realistic clinical scenarios addressing communication challenges, including difficult patients, interprofessional handovers, and emergencies.
