Topics & Speakers:

1. AI Tools to Support Research

Dr Eric TSUI, Senior Project Fellow, Educational Development Centre, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

A framework for categorising AI tools to support research with selective demonstrations is presented together with strategies on how to leverage the collective power and future-proof one's efforts in the use of such tools. Discussions and opinions from authoritative sources on the use of generative-AI tools will also be summarised.

2. Enhancing Research Writing through Customised AI Chatbots: Strategies and Demonstrations

Dr Simon WANG, Lecturer in English, Language Centre, Faculty of Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University

Generative AI chatbots have demonstrated potential to revolutionise many fields with their impressive abilities to simulate human conversation, and the domain of academic research writing is no exception. However, these tools are not without their limitations. The necessity for prompt engineering and the chatbots' inherent lack of contextual knowledge can pose challenges for users, particularly in the realm of research writing. In this workshop, the speaker first makes a compelling case for customising chatbots to re-use effective prompts and mitigate these issues. He will then illustrate the practical steps for customising chatbots to more effectively serve academic writing needs. Attendees will learn how to tailor AI tools to critically read research articles, generate innovative ideas, outline different sections of research manuscripts, and refine their written work. By employing these strategies, researchers can harness the capabilities of AI to optimise their writing process, while circumventing the limitations of the technology.

3. Citing AI-Generated Content: Methods and Considerations

Mr Seth KWOK, Scholarly Communications Librarian, CUHK Library, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

This session aims at providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of the methods and considerations involved in properly citing AI-generated content, which will cover essential topics such as the unique challenges posed by AI-generated content, current citation practices, and emerging citation standards.
