1. Assessing Academic Writing with AI: Potential and Challenges

Dr YEUNG Steven, Senior Lecturer, English Language Teaching Unit, The Chinese University of Hong KongStaff Profile

This presentation explores the potential and challenges of using artificial intelligence (AI) to assess academic writing. The first part will review existing research on AI applications for assessing academic writing, focusing on their benefits, limitations, and pedagogical implications. The second part will explore the use of generative AI (GenAI) in evaluating academic writing quality and scoring written assignments through mini-case studies. The findings will contribute to future research and inform pedagogical approaches.

Biography

Dr YEUNG Steven is a Senior Lecturer at the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received a PhD in Applied Linguistics and Education from University College London. His research interests include sociolinguistics, language and political economy and technology-enhanced language learning.

2. Rising to the Challenge of GenAI: Redesigning UG English Courses, Writing Assignments, GenAI Writing Literacy and Feedback Adaptation

This presentation will report on work inspired by the necessity to address the challenges of GenAI and the opportunity GenAI has created to enhance new ways of English language learning that the presenter has personally been involved in over the year. We have investigated how professional and academic language courses need to be redesigned to enable the development of GenAI-empowered learning, revised writing assignments to harness the potential of GenAI tools while addressing their challenges, piloted two versions of GenAI literacy for writing modules to help language students learn to use GenAI appropriately and ethically, and experimented with a change in our feedback practices that are more student-empowered with the use of a variety of GenAI feedback bots and reflective practices to encourage student critical thinking and transparency about the benefits and challenges of learning with GenAI.

Biography

Ms GASKELL Delian received a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics at UQAM and a Master of Education in Educational Technology at UBC. Originally from Canada, she has worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer in Hong Kong's university language centres for over 20 years. Her scholarship and research interests include pedagogic innovation, GenAI literacy for writing, using learning analytics to encourage data-informed course design, student engagement and self-regulated learning, student feedback literacy, GenAI feedback, and self-directed learning (SDL).

3. A Proposed Pedagogical Approach for GenAI in Language Education

This practice-focused presentation advocates thoughtfully integrating GenAI into language education to enrich student learning. We demonstrate innovative classroom activities that utilise GenAI as a facilitator to amplify human instruction, not replace it. The proposed blended learning model emphasises critical thinking and ethical considerations when engaging with AI-generated content. Key components include teacher training for effective GenAI integration, strategies to maintain student engagement with this technology, and developing assessments that accurately measure GenAI's impact on language proficiency. This presentation explores the pragmatic implications of leveraging GenAI sound to create modern, student-centred language education environments.

Biography

Dr KOHNKE Lucas is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of English Language Education at The Education University of Hong Kong. Holding a doctoral degree from the University of Exeter, UK, his speciality is the professional development of English language teachers in integrating technology. He has contributed over 30 articles to leading journals, including Educational Technology & Society, Education and Information Technologies, ReCALL, and RELC Journal. His diverse teaching areas span integrating technology into language classrooms, artificial intelligence in education, teacher training and English language teaching methodologies.
